Opossums are the only marsupials in North America. Opossums like these adorable babies stay in their mother’s pouch for the first couple of months and then ride around on her back for another month or so. These baby opossums will grow up to be the size of a house cat. They are nocturnal and are omnivores which means they will eat just about anything edible. Opossums are placid animals and prefer never to have a confrontation which explains why given the chance to fight, they pretend to be dead or “play possum” so the attacker will leave them alone. Opossums have a very short life span with most of them living only 18 months with man as their deadliest predator - most opossums are killed by cars. While driving at night, keep an eye out for opossums on the road and brake for them. They are not fast moving and can use a watchful eye behind the wheel to help them.
