Wondering if your area will have a migration fallout tomorrow, or just a slow barely noticeable group of new migrants coming through? If you want to see what’s happening in real-time overhead and get local as well as national information on migration patterns and birds, you are in luck!

BirdCast has redefined the way we see migration and the real-time migration tools make it easier to know what’s happening at night so you can be prepared for the next 3 mornings. Using data from weather surveillance radars to detect and track bird migration patterns across the United States. BirdCast’s algorithms analyze radar data from the nationwide network of weather surveillance radars operated by NOAA. These radars can detect birds in flight, especially during nighttime migration when there is less interference from other sources.

  • In addition to forecasts, BirdCast provides real-time analysis maps showing the actual intensities of bird migration occurring from local sunset to sunrise, as detected by the radar network.
  • Using the radar data along with atmospheric models and machine learning techniques, BirdCast generates 3-day forecasts predicting the intensity and patterns of nocturnal bird migration across the continental U.S.
  • The new BirdCast Migration Dashboard provides summaries at the county and state level, including estimates of total number of migrating birds, their directions, speeds, altitudes, and likely species based on eBird data.
  • BirdCast also offers migration alerts that notify users when intense migration events are predicted for their area, helping birders plan optimal times for observing migrants.

Birdcast can change the way you follow migration by providing a heads-up so you can be ready for those really special high-volume migration days.
